20th GSIS National Art Competition 2025

Joyce Ashworth is a contemporary Filipino artist whose work focuses on abstract art and contemporary realism, exploring emotion, memory, and form through color, texture, and gesture. Her pieces vary from quiet, restrained compositions to vibrant, layered explorations, crafted through intuition and rhythm. Rather than sticking to a single mode of abstraction, her approach shifts between minimal and expressive styles, always grounded in emotional clarity.
In her exploration of contemporary realism, she reinterprets familiar objects—such as harvests, vessels, and textiles—against softened or abstracted backdrops, emphasizing atmosphere and memory over literal depiction.
Rooted in the textures of lived experience—rural memory, ritual, intimacy, and the emotional weight of everyday forms—her practice invites viewers into spaces where clarity and feeling converge, each piece a quiet offering of both form and remembrance, celebrated at the Joyce Ashworth Gallery.
Raised in Lumban, Laguna, and originally from Sto. Tomas, Batangas, Joyce Ashworth began her journey into painting in 2019, inspired by Maestro Fidel M. Sarmiento, the President of the Art Association of the Philippines. She primarily works in acrylic and creates stunning pieces on canvas, wood, and ceramic surfaces.
Known for her abstract art, Joyce explores the dynamic interplay of light and shadow across deep tonal fields. Her abstract works have garnered multiple recognitions, including being a Finalist in the GSIS National Art Competition in 2023 - 2025, and receiving an Honorable Mention in 2024.
In addition to her abstract creations, a representational piece by Joyce was named a Finalist in the 2025 Sining Filipina Painting Competition. Both her abstraction and contemporary realism reflect a cohesive visual language that is deeply rooted in material sensitivity and a thoughtful engagement with personal and cultural themes.
Joyce's works are now collected across the Philippines and internationally, reaching audiences in the USA, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, PNG, and KSA.
Since 2021, Joyce has been a proud member of the Art Association of the Philippines (AAP), further solidifying her presence in the art community and promoting her artwork through the Joyce Ashworth Gallery.
The artist's medium of choice is acrylic, but Joyce also uses graphite and charcoal in her contemporary realism pieces. Each medium manifests in its own individual style, contributing to her unique approach to abstract art. While she primarily works on canvas, her artistic journey has been influenced by Maestro Fidel, leading her to experiment with painting on acacia wood, porcelain plates, bottles, ceramic tiles, and even sandpaper. "I believe that working in a single medium is restrictive to my artistic process," - Joyce.
